Out-group Characters Depicted in American Musical Films: Take the Film The Greatest Showman as an Example
The Greatest Showman, a 2017 film directed by Michael Gracey, focuses on the first circus in history, its founder, and its members under the background of The Great Depression. Therefore, this paper primarily examines the dialogue and lyrics in the film, and how these elements help to portray the out-group characters and describe what they have gone through. The data source of this research is The Greatest Showman (2017), which includes scripts, dialogues, and lyrics from the film soundtrack. Based on the content of the film, the authors carefully read the script credits and the soundtrack, subsequently selecting data relevant to the research topic and consulting secondary sources (research articles and audience reviews). By recording and analyzing relevant data, this paper relates them to the mechanisms of social identity theory. The paper finds that the film uses monologues, dialogues and title tracks to reflect the positions and emotions of out-group individuals, all of whom are discriminated against because of who they are, all of whom have good character traits, and all of whom dare to change the status quo, build shelters for themselves and ultimately take pride in their uniqueness and accept their out-group identity.

A Review of the Influence of Wu Dialect on English Pronunciation Acquisition
The Wu dialect is widely spoken in Wu-speaking regions of China, which covers a considerable number of English learners. However, the phonetic system of the Wu dialect differs significantly from that of English, which greatly affects the English learning process of Wu-speaking learners, thus attracting numerous researchers to conduct related studies. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of research on the influence of Wu dialect on English phonological learning over the past two decades and presents a selection of twenty-seven papers to explore the theoretical framework, the research methodology, and the specific impacts encountered by English language learners who speak Wu dialect. Among them, the theoretical discussion centered on language transfer theory, Flege’s Speech Learning Model and Best’s Perceptual Assimilation Model; the research methodology consisted of qualitative analysis and empirical study; and the focus was placed on positive and negative transfer effects, i.e., the challenges posed by the absence or presence of phonological differences in the Wu dialect to the learners of English. The findings reveal significant segmental and suprasegmental influences in English pronunciation acquisition, with segmental challenges including differentiation of consonants and incomplete articulation of vowels, and suprasegmental challenges including stress placement, intonation patterns, and phonological rhythm. In addition, the discussion highlights the need for more empirical studies to supplement qualitative analyses, the consideration of regional variations within Wu dialect, and the exploration of teaching strategies informed by research findings. Therefore, the paper advocates for future research focusing on regional differences, deeper exploration of suprasegmental influences, integration of research into teaching practices, and diversified research methods.

How Does Nine Years of Compulsory Education in China Impact the Rural Area People's Living Condition?
Article thumbnail
Nine years of compulsory education, a concept introduced by the Chinese government in 1986, provides complimentary education by the state from primary school (Grade 1-6) through junior high school (Grade 7-9) across the entire society. This paper reevaluates the widely accepted view that China’s nine-year compulsory education policy is universally beneficial. It aims to shed light on the challenges and limitations of the policy, particularly in rural areas, and seeks to move beyond the uncritical acceptance of this educational system. Employing a comprehensive methodological approach, the analysis integrates an extensive review of both domestic and international literature, media reports, and a rigorous evaluation of data reliability. Through comparative and refined analytical techniques, the paper presents trustworthy findings. The results indicate that the policy does not uniformly serve all families, especially in rural contexts where the costs—including material, living, and opportunity costs—often surpass the benefits. These expenses can deepen economic hardships for some households, although, at a broader level, the policy significantly boosts educational quality and societal awareness, providing a strong foundation for China's future growth. The conclusion suggests that despite its successes in enhancing literacy rates and access to education, the policy requires targeted adjustments to effectively address the persistent economic and gender disparities in rural communities.

The Public Health Implications of the Global Financial Crisis
Article thumbnail
The Global Financial Crisis resulted in significant economic problems that subsequently led to a public health crisis worldwide. For example, the unemployed suffered from more severe physical and mental health problems than the employed due to the loss of employer-sponsored health insurances. The crisis further exacerbated racial health inequalities that subsequently worsened maternal and child health outcomes, which negatively affected health status of the future generations. This paper provides a comprehensive discussion of the influence that this crisis has had on physical and mental health, health inequalities, and the intergenerational health impact. To respond to the health implications, the government implemented the Affordable Care Act and the Continuation of Health Coverage (CORBA). In the future, policymakers need to increase social safety net programs, especially government health insurance, for vulnerable populations so that another global financial crisis will likely not have such a negative and profound impact on public health outcomes. The motivation of this paper is to emphasize that higher-quality and more comprehensive unemployment health insurance that covers a broader and more diverse set of populations should become available for the unemployed during economic downturns. This article concludes that policymakers need to design health policies in a way that prevents future financial crises from depriving low-income and unemployed people of their right to health care. Policies must become proactive in advocating for health equity and creating opportunities for people to access medical services in a timelier manner, especially during times of financial downturns.

A Comparative Study of the Existential Resistance Consciousness of Camus and Shi Tiesheng
Albert Camus, the founder of "Absurdist Philosophy," portrays the absurdity and alienation of individuals in a strange world in his works. He opposes the ideology of submission, celebrates the spirit of resistance in adversity, and explores the true meaning of life. Shi Tiesheng, a renowned contemporary Chinese writer, questions the meaning of existence in the face of illness and hardship, reaching remarkable heights through imagination and speculation. Although there is ample research on both writers individually, there is a lack of comparative studies in literature and philosophy. This paper integrates relevant theories and recent research findings to conduct an in-depth study of the works and philosophical outlooks of Camus and Shi Tiesheng regarding existential dilemmas, religious choices, and collective resistance consciousness, exploring their explorations in resistance consciousness and existential challenges. Additionally, this paper explores the perspectives of Camus and Shi Tiesheng on the collective fate of humanity, discussing the insights brought about by people's reflections on modes of existence due to the global pandemic in 2019. This study broadens the research scope, deepening the understanding of these two writers, particularly regarding their existential resistance consciousness, which is inspiring for individuals to find meaning in adversity.

Face Culture and Its Extension under the Impact of the Internet
Face culture, as one of the important special symbols in the society, plays an indispensable role in building interpersonal connections. In order to view the future cross-cultural communication from a clearer perspective, this paper studies and compares the cases of "Internet face culture represented by social media" and "traditional face culture represented by dining table culture", and concludes that both of them have been further strengthened on the basis of the original culture, rather than changed due to the impact of the Internet. other words, face culture will not disappear with the change of media or lifestyle, on the contrary, it will continue to evolve a new model and exist in interpersonal relationships for a long time. However, no matter what form of face culture, whether it has a positive impact on interpersonal communication or not, it shows strong adaptability, that is, each region will evolve its own face culture suitable for the region according to its cultural differences, and then show the diversity of face culture with the help of media.
